Empowering Rural Women for Economic Independence

Women’s economic empowerment is a key driver of sustainable development and poverty reduction. In rural communities, women often face higher poverty levels than men, limiting their financial independence and opportunities. To address this issue, Prime Initiatives launched the Goat Rearing Project in the Banda District to provide women with a sustainable source of income and financial security.

How the Project Works

The project began with 40 selected women as the first cohort of beneficiaries. Each participant received a goat to rear for two years. At the end of this period, ownership of the goats will be transferred to a new group of beneficiaries, ensuring a continuous cycle of economic empowerment.

Goats are prolific breeders, capable of giving birth three times a year, producing at least 12 offspring within the two-year rearing period. This model enables women to grow their livestock, increase their earnings, and achieve long-term financial stability.

Expanding the Impact

Currently funded by All the Sky Foundation, the project aims to expand and reach more women across various communities. Prime Initiatives is actively seeking additional funding partners to scale this project, empowering more women to achieve economic independence through sustainable livestock farming.

This initiative not only improves the financial well-being of women but also strengthens food security, community resilience, and gender equality in rural Ghana.
